There is a maker inside us all. People often speak of the soothing and satisfying nature of making for relaxation, reward or regeneration. In earlier times, working with our hands was how we explored and became connected to the world. Then with industrialization and the feminist movement, many of us shifted away from making and towards higher-status thinking careers.
Making and creating with our hands, combined with conversation about slower living, adaptation and resourcefulness, connects head and heart to create change.
In this class, Jane Milburn will be showcasing one such hands-on activity – upcycling an old t-shirt into yarn! Whether it’s an old t-shirt from your own wardrobe, or a great find from an op-shop, join us to see how to upcycle a simple fashion basic into so much more!
WHAT YOU NEED:
If you can, bring an old t-shirt to the class – one that you’re happy to get creative with, and some scissors!
There are also TWO resources attached below, which you can download. Jane will be talking about these whilst we’re getting our creative on during the class!

YOUR FACILITATOR:
Jane Milburn believes in the power of adaptation in the natural world and her own. After agricultural science and leadership study applied to a career in rural communications and advocacy, Jane navigated a unique pathway to influence change in the way we dress. As the founder of Textile Beat and author of Slow Clothing: finding meaning in what we wear, Jane makes a compelling case for why and how we need to change the way we dress to live lightly on Earth. When the global pandemic deferred her Churchill Fellowship study tour, Jane did a permaculture design course that affirmed her focus on natural fibres and regeneration. Always adapting and evolving, Jane leads conversations and workshops about ethical, mindful and creative living in a climate-changing world.
